What is it about summer?

What is it about summer? Since it's been a full year plus since my last post, it appears I get the itch to blog annually. This summer seems especially fast paced and like it's flying by. We are getting a pool this summer (my husband's passion project-for real) and I think maybe because we have been looking so forward to that we haven't been living in the moment. I'm not sure but we aren't overbooked running from one activity to the next so I think just everyday life and the immense set of pool expectations are making the days fly by. I'm looking forward to it, but if it were up to me, the blow up pool that violates all of our HOA by laws would be the only pool we have. I have cared for pools in my life and I know that it's not always fun and because of our proximity to local wildlife it's only a matter of time before we have to rescue a rodent, reptile or mammal from the pool. So, while I'm looking forward to the pool I am not looking forward to the things that come along with it, including the risks. I'm a worrier by nature and if I don't have something to worry about, rest assured I'll come up with something. So I'll be worrying about my kids and your kids and the children of the world drowning in our pool every second of every day that it is open. Sounds like fun, right?

On the crafting front, I've been working on some fun pillows that I ordered through Connecting Threads. They are the Diamond Pillow Kit from Crazy Mom Quilts. Sadly, it looks like the kit is sold out but the pattern is still available via Connecting Threads. I like working from kits because I think like many people, sometimes I like to create without being creative. Does that make sense? A lot of the time, I just don't even have the mental energy to decide what is for dinner so having everything in one little kit is a lifesaver. I get to scratch the sewing itch without having to think too much.  I decided to use some of my stash to make two additional pillows-all destined for the couch my husband picked out that I don't love (ahem). But, I know I'll love it a whole lot more with these pillows on it! I only had to supplement a little background and backing fabric from my stash plus just a few small squares to complete the pattern. I have one more pillow to add the backing to and bind and then this project will be completed. I don't get much sewing time so it's taken me an embarrassingly long time to complete this little project.

On the knitting front, I have some plain old socks on the needles. I blazed through a pair that were self striping in no time (because I find self striping yarn just plain addictive) and then I cast on with the same yarn in a boring brown and it has turned into such a slog. I love a very basic sock and these certainly fit the bill but I'll be lucky to finish them this month. I need to get them off the needles because my boys are long overdue for some new winter hats. They've been wearing hats I made them before they were born for four years now- they are still in wonderful shape and even more miraculously they still fit! That's a wonderful testament to a great pattern and a new mom who had no idea what size heads newborns have! I have some yarn that will work, I just need to get them on the needles.

My boys are spending the weekend with their Nina and Papa so I am catching up around the house. Well, trying at least. I've got some hand knits soaking and am trying to hunt down my favorite winter hat because I know it needs a good bath as well. I had the itch to wash some hand knits, doesn't happen very often so when the urge strikes, I go for it!  I am also putting the three finished pillows from the Diamond Pillow kit in the wash. I'm anxious to see how they crinkle up!
